Je suis incapable de dire comment j'ai connu Ellen. Peut-être par le biais de la série "Ally McBeal", quand elle a commencé à sortir avec Portia De Rossi, qui y interprétait Nelle. Mais peut-être pas.

Toujours est-il que j'ai fini par me retrouver à regarder des vidéos de son émission "The Ellen Show" et que j'ai beaucoup ri lors de ses petits sketches (en plus d'apprécier ses interviews de mes acteurs et actrices préférés... de séries télé, bien sûr !)

Du coup, j'en suis venue à découvrir que des livres de Ellen étaient parus et je me suis dit que s'ils étaient aussi drôles que ce que j'avais pu voir d'elle, il fallait que je m'y mette !

J'ai été déçue, il me faut vous l'avouer. J'ai souvent trouvé ses blagues plus que bancales et surtout basées sur de grosses exagérations ! Pleines de loufoqueries !

J'ai vraiment eu l'impression qu'elle faisait du remplissage en écrivant tout et n'importe quoi... qui n'était pas drôle. Cela est encore plus vrai à la fin du livre. Arrivée au tiers du livre, je me suis dit "Ah, ça y est, elle arrive la Ellen qui me fait marrer !" Et j'ai ri, vraiment. Elle y parlait de situations de la vie quotidienne que l'on a tous vécues et je me suis dit : "mais comment est-ce possible que je n'ai jamais entendu d'autre humoriste parler de ça ?" Mais ça n'a malheureusement pas duré longtemps Enfin, au moins, j'ai tenté. Mais je continuerai de regarder ses vidéos sur YouTube !

Quelques phrases que j'ai particulièrement appréciées quand même :

- Page 4 : "Exercise. Any form of movement will do. Stretching keeps your limber, young, and energized. My favorite exercise is walking a block and a half to the corner store to buy fudge. Then I call a cab to get back home. (There's never a need to overdo anything.)"

- Page 59 : "If you want to know the truth, I blame the microwave for most of our problems. Anything that gets food that hot without fire is from the devil. If you don't believe me, put a Hot Pocket in your microwave for three or four minutes, then pop that thing in your mouth. If that's not Hell, my friend, I don't know what it is." (ça, ça m'a trop fait pensé au pilote de "Dharma & Greg" et, en particulier, à Larry, bien sûr !)

- Page 60 : "People are eating power bars all the time [...] I don't know what they're made from, but you could insulate a house with that stuff."

- Page 61 : "Have you tried to open a package of scissors lately ? You need scissors to get into scissors."

- Page 79 : "[...] scientists have proven that we only use 10 % of our brain. [...] It's just not that much, is it ? I mean, imagine what we could accomplish if we used the other 60 %."

- Page 83 : ""The other day I found my iron in the freezer. And the only reason I found it is that I was looking for my sunglasses."

- Page 143 : "I can remember when I was a kid, we had five channels. And we didn't have a remote. You had to hate something so much that you would be willing to get up and walk 5 feet to change the channel. If that wasn't enough, you had to guess at the volume, because it was different when you were up close than when you sat back down again."

- Page 158 : ce que les animaux de compagnie pourraient nous dire : "same boring dry food every day. I see what you eat. You think I'm stupid ?"
